History and Overview
The National Federation of Women Living with HIV and AIDS (NFWLHA) is a women-led organization that began its journey in 2006, emerging from collective discussions within the PLHIV community on the need for gender equality. It was formally registered in 2007.
NFWLHA is more than just a network it is a movement rooted in the belief that women living with HIV have the strength and capacity to lead change for themselves, their families, and their communities. Over the years, the organization has grown steadily, now reaching 46 districts across almost all provinces of Nepal and bringing together more than 28 member organizations.
These member organizations are led by Women Living with HIV (WLHIV), with more than 51% representation in both executive committees and general membership. This structure is a conscious and necessary approach to address long-standing barriers and exclusion faced by WLHIV in accessing services, opportunities, and decision-making spaces. NFWLHA is truly an organization of and for women living with HIV, committed to ensuring their voices are heard and their leadership is recognized. Today, the federation is guided by a seven-member executive board, all of whom are women living with HIV.
Over the years, NFWLHA has worked to bring together and strengthen member organizations and community-based organizations, raise awareness on HIV and AIDS, promote prevention, and advocate for policy change. At its core, the organization envisions a society where women living with HIV and their children can live with dignity, free from stigma and discrimination.
Alongside this, NFWLHA places strong emphasis on supporting youth living with HIV (YLHIV) and children affected by HIV and AIDS (CABA). The organization works to ensure their access to essential services, strengthen their capacities, and create meaningful opportunities for their participation in decision-making processes.
For nearly two decades, NFWLHA has continued its work with dedication in the field of HIV, standing firmly for the rights, dignity, and empowerment of women, children, and youth living with HIV in Nepal.
